Access Health Africa is the new face of World Camp, founded 15 years ago at UNC-Chapel Hill by a group of undergraduate students. In fact, their world headquarters was once located at Long Ridge Farms!
Today, Access Health Africa has become a leader in providing health education, HIV/AIDS youth support services, and advanced healthcare in Malawi, Africa.
Why health? |
One of the biggest challenges facing Malawi is a lack of trained healthcare workers, councilors, and physicians. Estimates count 171,000 children aged 0-14 living with HIV in Malawi. Among the Nation's population of almost 16 million, over 45% are under the age of fourteen, with more than 825,000 orphans - half of which lost one or both parents to the AIDS epidemic. Malawi has just one doctor per 50,000 people - one of the lowest levels in the world. The shortage of medical staff in Malawi is largely due to access to education and aggravated by HIV/AIDS.
